There are plans in Northern Ireland to change the structure of towns and cities to encourage the use of walking, cycling and public transport. As part of the scheme Ministers want to ensure that pedestrians benefit from well-connected, safe, high quality walkways and cycleways.
The idea behind the 3-five-10 scheme is that for each distance travelled a different mode of transport is encouraged.
3km – On foot
5km – By bike
10km – On public transport
This scheme attempts to decrease private car use, ease congestion and encourage people to travel more sustainably suggesting suitable methods for travel. According to travel statistics in 2015 three fifths of all journeys undertaken were under five miles, with 63% of these trips being made by car!
Why not set yourself a challenge this New Year and try to make the most of your local footways, cycleways and public transport networks by undertaking local journeys on foot, public transport or bike!
