Cycle to Work Day 2016 is fast approaching. The national event, held on September 14th, aims to encourage everyone to take to two wheels and cycle to work for at least one day. According to the Census data for 2011, 741,000 people in the UK cycle to work regularly. With these numbers expected to grow, Cycle to Work Day hopes to see one million people regularly commuting to work by bike by 2021!
Companies of various sizes have shown support for the event as well as cycling advocacy groups such as British Cycling, Sustrans, the London Cycling Campaign, Cyclescheme, Cyclescheme Ireland, the Bicycle Association, CTC- the National Cycling Charity, and Cycle Nation. Since its creation in 2013, employers have been integral to the success of the event. Cycle to Work Day offers employers of various sizes a platform to promote active travel and healthy living, themes that are important to PBA. According to Cycle to Work Day, employers who actively promote cycling generate additional parking spaces, enhance staff retention and encourage healthier lifestyles. Employees and employers can save money and even participate in Government initiatives such as the Cycle to Work Scheme.
In aid of Cycle to Work Day, bike shops across the UK have been enlisted to provide free bike health checks- essentially an MOT for your bike! A trained professional will assess your bike and give it a rating of Green, Amber or Red. Green indicates that your bike is in good condition, whereas Amber or Red means it is advisable to book your bike in to the workshop before your journey. Free bike check forms can be downloaded from the site. Just enter your postcode to find local participating companies. This service is available between the 1st and 14th of September.
